FAQs

What if I’ve never written anything creative before? Will these courses be for me?

We aim to provide a creative space for everyone, whether you are just starting or have been writing for years. Almost all of our courses include samples to read, and writing exercises designed to be inspiring and approachable for writers at any level. Take a look at our individual course pages to find out which courses will suit you best – but don’t be afraid to try something new! We want everyone to feel safe to experiment with their writing, regardless of experience.

Will I have to share my work?

We encourage all those taking part in our courses to share their work, but you absolutely don’t have to! Some of our courses are designed to include sharing work and giving your own feedback to fellow attendees, and others are completely open – you can share as little or as much as you want. Check the individual course pages to see which courses will be best for you.

How much feedback will I get on my work?

Most of our in-person and online courses provide opportunities for tutor feedback, and some for group feedback. Check the individual course descriptions for more information.

Our Post-MA Sessions are based entirely on group workshopping of work-in-progress, so you will get plenty of input from writers at a similar stage to you.

If you’re at a stage where one-to-one feedback is what you really need, we also offer mentoring, and one-off critical feedback. Take a look at our Mentoring page for more information.

How much time will I be expected to commit to the course?

For our online courses, you can spend as little or as much time as you like on writing exercises and reading, but we recommend allowing at least three hours per week.

For a few of our courses, we provide material to read beforehand, but for the large majority, you can just show up on the start date, and take as much or little time as you like over reading the assignments and trying the writing exercises.

On our Post-MA courses, participants spend time reading each other’s work between sessions.

What if I book a place on a course and then I can’t attend?

You will receive a full refund if you cancel over 30 days before the course is due to start. If you ask to cancel your booking after that, we will do out best to fill your place, and will only be able to offer you a refund if we do so.
