Join us for a masterclass in creative writing for therapeutic purposes using a trauma-informed and trauma-sensitive process.

Our stories matter.

After a difficult, overwhelming or traumatic experience, we can be left feeling powerless, without language or agency. Research shows that traumatic events can immobilise those regions of the brain which we need to put words to our experiences, and therefore understand them. For those of us with a history of trauma, writing can be a valuable catalyst for healing and recovery.

It can offer us a way back from silence and shame.

Through writing, we can begin to cultivate linguistic control over the trauma, reclaim our voices and rewrite our stories.

Using a trauma-informed and trauma-sensitive methodology, this masterclass will introduce you to using creative writing as a therapeutic tool that can support your wellbeing, encourage self-discovery and even healing.

In this masterclass, our interest is in the process of writing rather than the craft. Grammar, punctuation and spelling are not our focus here! This masterclass is therefore suitable for all levels and writing abilities.

The session will be delivered in 2 parts:

In the first half, we will explore the current research and theory which underpins the therapeutic value of using creative writing for trauma recovery. This will be interspersed with key insights drawn from my own work as a psychotherapist, published writer and from delivering therapeutic writing groups.

The second half of the workshop is experiential. You will be invited to take part in a gentle independent writing exercise and some small group work. Only you will decide what your level of involvement will be at this stage and there is no requirement to share what you have written.

A recommended reading list and further information about my longer courses will be made available to all participants.

This event will happen through Zoom and not through Eventbrite. Please check your junk mail if you haven’t received the Zoom link a day before the event. This is a live online event only. To take part, you will need a computer or smart device and reliable internet connection.

If you do not receive an invitation link, or if you have any other questions, please contact us at ennis@londonlitlab.co.uk.
