Bringing the novella-in-flash to life means the flash fiction writer harnessing the best qualities of the novel and the novelist harnessing the best qualities of flash fiction. PLEASE NOTE: THIS COURSE HAS BEEN POSTPONED: New date 15th April

This workshop will give you an introduction to the novella-in-flash form, a unique and exciting fusion of long-form and short-form fiction.

The novella-in-flash combines the best aspects of novel-writing with the best aspects of flash fiction (or the short-short story). The novella-in-flash harnesses flash fiction’s impulse for compression, musicality and intensity, while still exploring characters fully, digging deeply into social or moral issues, and building a rich story-world and longer narrative arc.

If you want to reinvigorate your novel-writing, or if you’ve been feeling stale in writing only one-off flash fictions, the novella-in-flash can transform your writing in a lasting way.

Through this workshop, you will –

  • Get more familiar with key aspects of the novella-in-flash formLearn how writing novellas-in-flash improves your other fiction writing (novels, short stories, flash fiction)
  • Practise using an archetypal flash fiction structure
  • Identify possible story scenarios for producing your own novella
  • Choose one and write a key scene (in the form of a flash fiction)
  • Write a further flash, building on the first
  • Develop a provisional cast of characters
  • Learn strategies for linking individual moments into an overarching storyline
  • Receive novella-in-flash recommended reading suggestions
  • Find out about publication opportunities
  • Have the chance to ask questions, and identify your next steps
